Function:

1) A major constituent chemical, hyperforin, may be useful for treatment of alcoholism. Hyperforin has also displayed antibacterial properties against Gram-positive bacteria. 

2) St. John's wort can be used for chest tightness, urgency, diarrhea, depression, diarrhea, coughing up blood or other hemorrhage. 

3) St. John’s wort is most commonly used for depression and conditions that sometimes go along with depression such as anxiety, tiredness, loss of appetite and trouble sleeping. There is some strong scientific evidence that it is effective for mild to moderate depression. 

4) The most common dose used in studies has been 300 mg, three times a day as a standardized extract.
